Inspired by Maleficent
“In the end, my kingdom was not united by a hero or a villain as legend predicted, but by one who was both hero and villain. Her name was Maleficent.”
As a child I would watch Disney movie after Disney movie. Sleeping Beauty was one of my favourites. A classic fairy tale with good battling evil, ending with a sword piercing the heart of a dragon and true-love’s kiss breaking the curse. But gone are the days of simplicity. What is considered evil? Who is to judge what is right or wrong?
After watching Maleficent, it made me wish the movie was made a few years earlier as it would have been the perfect text to use for my high school English essays. It would have been perfect for an essay about journeys, learning and belonging. Perfect as a comparative study against the original movie. All those English classes have really brainwashed me. I cannot watch a movie in peace without thinking critically about it.
Nevertheless I still enjoyed the movie. My favourite scene by far was at the castle hall where Maleficent casts her curse. Angelina Jolie’s cackling laughter, her evil smile and her voice took me back into the original Disney scene. I couldn’t not believe how exact the replication of the scene was, It brought a chill down my spine. I decided to do a little outfit shoot in the woods inspired by Maleficent. I didn’t have synthetic cheeks, only a bit of contouring. Didn’t have my own wings, just a feathered collar top. Just a simple little shoot inspired by Maleficent.
